The cinematographer's role is extremely complex.

He determines how people respond to a film visually and collaborate intensively with a director while searching for locations. Locations are places where ideas are born. It's the birthplace of a scene that is visualized before it is filmed.

After which with the help of an art director a set is executed. It is a slow and steady process. Under these circumstances is becomes healthier for a cinematographer to shoot one film at a time. Only then can he treat it with sincerity, rather than doing a routine job where his whole day is spent lighting up one set after the other. Each looking no different than the other.

While filming the acclaimed "Roja", It was suggested to the director Mani Ratnam that a substitute for the cinematographer be found as Santosh Sivan had a prior commitment. He immediately retorted by asking the man who suggested the idea if the same could be done with the heroine of the film under similar circumstances.

The key to a complete visual film is a director who respects his technicians, allows them to experiment, permit them to blend completely into the making of it; finally giving the result that single finished look it deserves.
