Halo...

In Mumbai when we were filming halo, I needed a few shots at the break of dawn. The children who were acting in it were aware that there was more to it because I used to make stories and tell them that I had no money and they would have to help. By then they had become totally involved in the film. Everybody would say roll, cut, action etc. I had no prior permissions and we were all wary of a few cops who were constantly hounding us. The kids figured this out and conceived a plan where they would hold up a red cloth when there was danger and I would show white and count till three They would run across the street and I would shoot as they would be while crossing an empty street.

The whole experience was like some great jungle trail adventure where they would all silently wake up at 3 am and meet up at a certain place. When we left they saw the cops and started howling with joy at the fact that they hoodwinked the police. So this whole thing was as much theirs as mine and it was juicy with full of memorable moments. All this could also have been done peacefully in the confines of a studio or set but the whole adventure element was the spice.
