You
seem to have this extraordinary ability to turn non actors into
actors. Malli, Halo and The Terrorist for instance.
How does a filmmaker get non- actors to perform?
A
small film is bound to have restrictions with its cast. It is very
important to understand actors if they are from non-acting backgrounds.
A carpenter, your mailman, friends anybody can act in the film if
they are game enough and have an interesting face.
Financial
constraints leave you with little choice. You can't change their
basic persona but they have to be dealt with a certain degree of
sensitivity while facing up to the camera.Make them feel at ease
on the sets. Explain things to them clearly. There are times when
your actors are not exactly camera conscious and it may appear as
though they have rendered some mind-blowing performance.
It is imperative that actors and actresses are comfortable with
the cinematographer because most of the time, apprehension springs
out of a sense of insecurity connected to their appearance. It is
crucial to make the actors really comfortable in front of the camera
and make them relate to it in a way they would relate to their closest
friend. It is the only way to lose inhibitions, get them onto a
free state where you are spontaneous, effervescent and your response
is natural.
This is one of the main ways to make an actor look more beautiful
and to make him perform better.
Low
budget films have this uncanny ability of turning non-actors into
actors.
